How we bring cargo from Germany to Azerbaijan
Germany is not one of our fixed service lines, so every shipment is arranged on individual request. You send a description of the goods, the weight and the supplier’s address; an operator prepares an offer with the route, terms and price.
We can arrange collection from the supplier’s warehouse or plant, or the supplier delivers the goods to an agreed point. On receipt, the cargo is measured, the documents are checked and the final price is confirmed.
Small and mid-size lots travel as consolidated (groupage) cargo on one manifest with other clients’ goods and are charged per kilogram. Full container (FCL), part container (LCL), full truckload (FTL) and dedicated shipments are available on request.
There are two ways to handle customs clearance:
- You clear the goods yourself or through your own broker, and we deliver the cargo to Azerbaijan.
- You hand clearance to us as a separate customs brokerage service: we check the documents, prepare the declaration and coordinate the procedures. Terms are agreed individually in the offer.
What companies import from Germany
Azerbaijani businesses turn to German suppliers mainly for goods where quality and engineering precision matter. Much of this cargo is heavy, oversized or sensitive, so packaging and routing matter as much as the rate.
For heavy equipment, give us the loading method (forklift, crane) as well as weight and dimensions — it can change the collection and transport plan. Typical orders include:
- Industrial equipment and machine tools — machining centres, compressors, pumps, packaging lines
- Automotive spare parts and assemblies for service centres and wholesalers
- Electrical engineering and automation — control units, sensors, measuring instruments
- Medical and laboratory equipment and consumables
- Chemicals — industrial chemicals, coatings, adhesives (some ship under special conditions)
- Professional tools, fasteners and parts for construction machinery
Routes and transport modes from Germany to Baku
We choose the transport mode based on the nature of the cargo, its urgency and your budget. There are several realistic ways of shipping from Germany to Baku, and they can substitute for one another.
Transit time depends on the route and mode and is stated in the offer. As a rule of thumb, air is the fastest option and sea is usually the most economical for heavy, high-volume cargo.
- Road — from Germany through the Balkans and Turkey, then via Georgia into Azerbaijan. The most common choice for palletised cargo and full truckloads (FTL).
- Sea and rail — containers from Hamburg or Bremerhaven to the Black Sea ports of Poti or Batumi, then on to Baku by rail or truck. Suited to heavy and bulky lots.
- Air — from major cargo hubs such as Frankfurt and Leipzig. For urgent spare parts, electronics and small, high-value shipments.
Customs and documents for German goods
Import charges in Azerbaijan depend on the goods’ HS code: it sets the customs duty rate, while import VAT is 18% of the customs value plus duty. Customs fees are added on top, and the declaration is filed electronically with the State Customs Committee.
Leaving the European Union requires an export declaration, which is lodged on the German side. Some machinery and electronics may count as dual-use goods and may need an export licence in Germany — check this with your supplier in advance.
A shipment from Germany usually needs:
- Commercial invoice — full description, quantity, unit price and Incoterms rule
- Packing list — weight and dimensions of each package
- Transport document: CMR for road, AWB for air, bill of lading (B/L) for sea
- Certificate of origin — in Germany usually issued by the chamber of commerce and industry (IHK)
- Where required: certificate of conformity, registration documents for medical devices, safety data sheet (SDS) for chemicals
Tips for importers buying from German suppliers
Most problems arise before the cargo moves, while terms are being agreed with the supplier. A few simple steps save both time and money.
- Negotiate FCA instead of EXW. Under Incoterms 2020, EXW puts export clearance on the buyer, which is awkward for a buyer based outside the EU. Under FCA, the seller handles export clearance.
- Ask the supplier for the HS code. German manufacturers usually know their codes, which lets you estimate duty before you buy.
- Avoid vague invoice lines such as «equipment» or «spare parts» — list each item separately with its model and part number.
- Ask for wooden crates or sturdy pallets for machinery. If needed, we can add extra packing and palletising.
- Cordless tools, oils, coatings and other liquids ship under special conditions — declare them in your request up front.
- Buying from several suppliers? Put all the addresses in one request: the loads can be combined into one shipment.
What to include in your request
The more complete your details, the closer the offer will be to the final amount. The price is based on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, and cargo is handed over at our warehouse in Baku.
- Description of the goods and, if known, the HS code
- Total weight, volume or dimensions of each package, number of packages
- Supplier’s city or the pickup address
- Invoice value and the agreed Incoterms rule
- Who will handle customs clearance: you, your broker or our brokerage team
- Any goods with batteries, liquids or that need special inspection
