How shipping from Dubai to Azerbaijan works
We do not run our own warehouse in the UAE, so cargo from Dubai is handled on individual request. You describe the goods, approximate weight and volume and give the supplier’s address; an operator replies with a written offer covering route, transport mode and terms.
Once the offer is agreed, we collect the goods from the supplier’s warehouse or shop in Dubai, or the supplier delivers them to an agreed point. On receipt the cargo is weighed and measured, the documents are checked and the final transport price is confirmed.
The cargo is handed over at our warehouse in Baku. You can clear customs yourself or through your own broker, or have us do it as a separate customs brokerage service — the terms are agreed individually in the offer.
What businesses import from Dubai
Dubai is first and foremost a trading and re-export hub rather than a manufacturing centre. Wholesalers’ warehouses there hold goods from China, Korea, Japan, Europe and India side by side, so Azerbaijani companies use Dubai to assemble a wide range quickly from one place.
The most frequent requests involve:
- Electronics: smartphones, tablets, laptops, accessories and spare parts
- Auto parts, lubricants and accessories, including for Japanese and Korean makes
- Tyres and wheels
- Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG): food, beverages, household chemicals, fragrances
- Building and finishing materials, sanitary ware, lighting
- Home appliances and air conditioners
Routes from Dubai to Baku: air, sea and land
Dubai has two main gateways: Jebel Ali, one of the largest container ports in the region, and the city’s airports, Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum (DWC). Light, high-value cargo such as phones and electronics usually goes by air — the fastest and most predictable option.
For heavy or bulky cargo — tyres, building materials, large consignments — a combination of sea and land transport makes more sense. There is no direct overland route between the UAE and Azerbaijan, and transit-country rules can change, so we choose the route for each shipment based on the goods, urgency and your budget.
Transit time from Dubai to Baku depends on the route and mode and is stated in the offer. Small consignments travel as groupage on a shared manifest with other clients’ cargo and are priced per kg. Full container (FCL), part container (LCL) or dedicated shipments are available on request.
Customs and documents: what matters with re-exported goods
Azerbaijani customs looks at the country of origin, not the country of purchase. A Chinese phone bought in Dubai is still Chinese for customs purposes, and a Japanese-made spare part is Japanese. The invoice and certificate of origin must therefore show the actual country of manufacture.
The import duty rate depends on the HS code of the goods. Import VAT is 18% of the customs value plus duty, and customs fees are charged on top. Declarations are filed electronically with the State Customs Committee.
Typical documents:
- Commercial invoice with description, quantity, price and country of origin
- Packing list
- Transport document: air waybill (AWB) or bill of lading (B/L)
- Certificate of origin, where required
- Certificate of conformity or other permits depending on the product (for example, food and cosmetics)
Practical tips for importers buying in Dubai
The Dubai market moves fast, and so do paperwork and packing mistakes. A few rules keep cargo from getting stuck in transit or at customs.
- Always declare battery-powered products — phones, laptops, power banks — in your request: they ship under special conditions.
- Mention fragrances, aerosols and liquids in advance as well; terms and price for these are agreed separately.
- Ask the supplier for an invoice showing the real value and the correct country of origin. Undervaluation leads to extra checks and delays at customs.
- If you buy from several sellers, send the operator the list and ask for the boxes to be marked so everything is consolidated into one shipment.
- If the seller is in a free zone (such as JAFZA), confirm in advance who prepares the documents for moving goods out of the zone.
- Bulky but light goods may be charged by volumetric weight — ask the supplier for compact packing.
How to request a quote for cargo from the UAE
In the request form, give the product name, approximate weight and volume, number of packages, the supplier’s address and whether you need help with customs clearance. The operator will send an offer with a route and terms that fit your cargo.
Pricing is individual: chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight. The final amount is confirmed once the cargo has been received and measured.
