Truck shipping from Türkiye to Baku: the classic route

A large share of cargo between Türkiye (Turkey) and Azerbaijan moves by road. Trucks cross from Türkiye into Georgia, enter Azerbaijan at the Red Bridge border crossing and continue to Baku.

Road freight’s strength is flexibility: goods are loaded at the supplier’s premises or at our Istanbul warehouse and are not transferred to another vehicle on the way. That matters for fragile and palletised cargo.

In Türkiye the export declaration is normally filed by the seller, that is, the exporter. Agree this when you order: cargo without export documents ready cannot leave for the border.

Routes from Russia and Europe

Road cargo from Russia mainly enters through the Samur–Yalama border crossing. It is the main overland route for companies with regular supply from Russia and other CIS countries.

From Europe — Germany, Italy, Poland and elsewhere — trucks usually run via Türkiye and Georgia, though other routings are considered for some cargo. The choice depends on the goods and the situation at the borders; the operator gives the timeline in the quote.

FTL and LTL: full truckload or groupage

FTL (Full Truck Load) means the truck is dedicated to your cargo. If your volume fills a truck, or the goods must be collected straight from the supplier without an intermediate warehouse, FTL is the right call. Full truckloads are arranged on request.

LTL (Less than Truck Load), or groupage, means several importers’ cargo shares one truck. For one or two pallets or a few cartons it is the sensible option: you pay only for your own chargeable weight, per kg.

The choice depends on urgency as well as volume. A groupage truck may wait until it is full, while a dedicated truck leaves as soon as your goods are ready.

CMR consignment note and TIR carnet

The core document of international road transport is the CMR consignment note. It confirms the carrier has taken over the goods and records the shipper, consignee, description of the goods and number of packages.

The TIR carnet is a customs transit document. Under the TIR Convention, a sealed truck can cross transit countries without the cargo being opened at each border and without extra guarantees; customs control takes place in the destination country. On multi-border routes like Türkiye–Georgia–Azerbaijan it saves time.

You will also need a commercial invoice, a packing list and, where relevant, a certificate of origin. On import, duty by HS code, customs fees and 18% VAT apply. For cargo from Türkiye, Freight + Customs (“Cargo”) is available; for other countries, customs clearance is a separate brokerage service.

What road freight is best for

Road freight to Azerbaijan is the go-to option for palletised and boxed commercial cargo from countries at medium distance, Türkiye above all.

The standard international truck is a curtain-sider semi-trailer: it can be loaded from the rear, the side or the top, which makes long and heavy items easier to fit. For cargo beyond standard dimensions or weight, feasibility is confirmed separately.

  • clothing, home textiles, fabrics and trims
  • furniture, window and door profiles, building and finishing materials
  • food and beverages — with the required certificates
  • cosmetics and household chemicals — liquids and gels declared in advance
  • equipment, spare parts and industrial goods

Preparing cargo for a truck

Stacking cartons on pallets and stretch-wrapping them reduces the risk of damage and speeds up loading. Every carton should carry your TK-XXXXXXX customer number — that is how the warehouse links the goods to you.

Palletising and extra packing are available as add-ons, as is collection from the supplier’s address. If you need temperature control or the cargo is out of gauge, say so in your request and the operator will confirm whether and on what terms it can be done.

You choose the shipping type, Express or Economy — that is the speed. Whether the goods go by truck or another mode is decided by TuranKargo based on the cargo and the route.

How long does a truck from Türkiye to Baku take?

Delivery speed from Türkiye depends on the shipping type: Express takes roughly 3–5 days and Economy 10–12 days. For a full truckload (FTL), the operator states the timeline separately in the quote.

Do I need a whole truck for a few pallets?

No. Small shipments travel as groupage (LTL) with other cargo and are charged by chargeable weight, per kg.

What is a CMR?

A CMR is the consignment note for international road transport. It confirms the carrier has taken over the goods and records the key shipment details.

Why is a TIR carnet used?

A TIR carnet lets a sealed truck cross transit countries without the cargo being opened. That saves time at the borders.

Do you clear customs on cargo arriving by truck?

For cargo from Türkiye, yes — under Freight + Customs (“Cargo”) with one final amount. For cargo from Russia, Europe and other countries, customs clearance is available as a separate brokerage service on individual terms.
